Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and 1 year of clerical work experience; and 2 + years of legal clerical work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing, and filing legal documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents. Work experience which involved the performance of a variety of clerical tasks and demonstrated knowledge of office practices and procedures, and the ability to carry out procedures in clerical work systems, and operate various kinds of office equipment including computers, Microsoft Office, and other technologies.
Substitutions Allowed: The following may be substituted for education: 4 years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high school diploma. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted up to four (4) years of the education requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months). An Associate s, Bachelor s, Master s or PhD degree from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for the education requirement.

The following may be substituted for experience: An Associate s degree in Secretarial Science or Office, Administration and Technology (OAT) from an accredited business school or community college may be substituted for up to 2 years of the clerical work experience requirement.
Successful completion of semester credits in clerical, office support, or business technology curriculum leading to a degree or diploma at an accredited community college, business or technical school, college, or university which included courses in English, clerical/office procedures, and mathematics may be substituted up to 2 years of the clerical work experience requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months). A Bachelor s degree in any field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to 4 years of the clerical work experience requirement.
A Master s or PhD degree in any field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for 1 year of the clerical work experience requirement.
An Associate s degree in legal secretary studies, paralegal studies, legal studies, law or a related field from an accredited community college, business, or technical school, may be substituted for 2 years of work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing, and filing legal documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents.
A Bachelor s degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, law or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up 4 years of work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing, and filing legal documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents.
A Master s or PhD degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, law or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to 1 year of work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing, and filing legal documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents.
A JD Degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to 4 years of work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing, and filing legal documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents.
Knowledge of: Legal terminology; form, content and use of legal documents; legal processes and procedures; the various types of court actions and associated processes; filing methods and systems; grammar, spelling and word usage; law office practices and procedures. Ability to: Prepare and process standard forms needed for specific legal actions; locate and abstract data from legal files and records; establish and maintain case files and systems of legal records; operate computer equipment to input, verify, update and extract data from information systems; provide information to defendants, witnesses, attorneys, court personnel, and the general public; explain legal processes, procedures and/or departmental policies; work within constant time constraints and deadlines; type at a rate of 40 net words per minutes; as applicable to specific positions, take dictation at a rate of 80 words per minute and transcribe notes accurately; deal effectively with employees, attorneys, court personnel and the public.

Legal Clerk III
Duties: Performs a wide variety of legal clerical work in support of staff attorneys to include preparing, checking, and processing legal forms, documents, and related materials, locating and abstracting information from legal files and records, and gathering and organizing relevant material for use in legal proceedings; and performs other related duties as required.
